A lot has happened in my life over the past 5 months I've been on a blogging hiatus, and I'll be sharing with you one of the most recent and most amazing changes that has occurred in my life. On April 20th, 2015, I became a dog momma!
This is Rocket Cruise, my new dog! He is 8 years-old, and I adopted him from the Welland & District Humaine Society. He may be 8, but isn't he just as cute as a little puppy?! I can't get over how adorable he is sometimes! Here is the story of how Rocket came to become a member of the family and to find his "Furr-Ever" home!
My mother, who was house sitting at my brother's place at the time, sent me a link on Facebook to a dog up for adoption from the Humane Society - ever since we lost our dog of 10 years last summer, Nikki, we've often shown each other links to puppies or dogs looking for good homes, not to seriously consider a new pet but as a way to torture ourselves. The link she sent introduced me to Rocket, who was just so precious and sweet-looking. Something just compelled me, and I started to talk to my mom about seriously considering including a dog in our lives again. In response, she said to me, "Alright, you want a challenge? Call the humane society and find out what the steps are for adopting a dog."
And that's exactly what I did; I called them and a few minutes later, my mother was picking me up and we were rushing downtown to the humane society to visit Rocket for the first time. Meeting him, I found that he was just as sweet in person. He was very skinny, you could feel and see his rib cage and spine, but he still managed to be so affectionate and upbeat. Not to mention, for an 8 year-old dog, he had a ton of energy!
One thing that surprised us was how quick the adoption process was - Rocket ended up coming home with us less than 24 hours later! But he's managed to adjust to his new home and family very well. He does have a bit of territorial aggression - we weren't able to get any details from the humane society, but we suspect that his original owners didn't treat him very kindly, plus it made sense for him to be a little distrusting with him having been adopted once before and then returned two weeks later by another woman - but it's something we've been working on with him. As he's settled and gotten used to his new home, we've had less and less incidents with him becoming aggressive.
I just love Rocket to bits! I miss him whenever I'm out of the house visiting my boyfriend, and I feel guilty when I have a 5 hour shift at work, even though he has my mother at home for company. I've even been sure to let my boyfriend know that if the time ever came where we chose to live together, Rocket and I are a packaged deal, but that won't be a problem because I can tell whenever he comes by that he cares about Rocket too.
Tell me about your loving pets in the comments below! OR, let me know if you've had anything life-altering happen to you lately, I always want to hear about how you guys are doing :)
