30 Day Anime Challenge - Week 1

How's it going, my nerdy friends? I've been somewhat addicted to finding cool & fun link-ups to participate in, and this one is no exception - a whole month of anime prompts! I'll admit, as I've gotten older, my interests in anime have declined, but I've never lost interest in it completely. Maybe this tag will actually rekindle my love for anime and help to introduce me to some new series 😄Big shout-out to Megan from A Geeky Gal for creating this tag! Instead of posting every single day, I figured I'd do 4 collective posts for each week of September. Hope you guys are as excited for a whole month of anime as I am - let's get to it!

Day 1 – What was your very first anime?
If we're going all the way back to childhood, I'd have to list such classics as Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball Z. But if we're talking about first animes in the context of actually knowing what anime is, that would be Gundam SEED. I was just flipping through the channels at home one day during summer vacation and on channel 25 I found myself in the middle of a Gundam SEED, episode, one that was rife with drama and actually surprised me at how "adult" it was for being on a channel I've been watching since the 4th grade (it was on at 9 o'clock at night, but still). I was instantly hooked. Shows like InuYasha and Fruits Basket weren't far behind, as the school year following that summer was when I seriously became hooked on manga and anime.

Day 2 – Who was your first anime crush?
Easy - Athrun from Gundam SEED. For the majority of 8th grade, I would dream every night that I was a crew member on the Archangel and interacted with everybody from the show - including Athrun, who at this point was finally fighting for the right side. Don't get me wrong, I adored Kira, he was incredibly sweet, but something about Athrun drew me to him immediately.

Day 3 – Do you prefer Subs or Dubs?
If I'm being completely honest, I'd say I prefer dubs. I know plenty of hard-core anime fans will laugh at me for that, but when I was seriously getting into anime in the 8th and 9th grade, the shows I watched were all subbed. When I tried going back and watching them subbed, it was just too weird (especially Fruits Basket, where in the Japanese version, Yuki both looks and sounds like a girl - it was way too much XP). I will admit that some dubs are absolute trash, but when the team working on them genuinely cares about the show, the dubs usually come out great, and are typically cast very well. Nobody here can tell me they don't like the English voice cast for Ouran High School Host Club, am I right?

Day 4 – What anime deserves more love?
One of my favourite anime series (and possibly-still-ongoing manga series) of all time that I don't think a ton of people are aware of is The Wallflower. It's kind of weird, I'll give you that, and it can take a while to get used to the voices no matter what language you watch it in, but it's also freaking hilarious! It's about this group of 4 ridiculously hot boys who live in this huge mansion. Their landlady tells them that they're gonna have to start paying rent unless they help turn her niece into a "proper lady" - and said niece looks like she walked straight out of The Ring; insanely long black hair, hates the outdoors and the light in general, and is obsessed with horror movies & gore. Also, they made a Japanese drama out of this series, and it's actually really good 💕

OH! Another anime that I wish could get some more love is La Corda d'Oro, it's all about music and it's an old favourite of mine and maybe if more people fall in love with it they'll finally create an English dubbed version - and possibly even bring the video games that the series is based on to North America 😁

Day 5 – What is your guilty pleasure anime?
While I wouldn't call the anime itself a guilty pleasure, it probably still counts based on the sheer number of times I have watched and re-watched the series - Ouran High School Host Club. You don't want to know just how much I have worn out those DVDs from sheer use over the years... Also, I have found myself reaching for The Wallflower to re-watch when I've had a particularly bad day - not exactly sure why, but it's a thing.
This image perfectly sums up The Wallflower in a nutshell XD

Day 6 – What anime recommendation have you tried this year?
It was my boyfriend who got me to watch beyond the first episode of Agretsuko on Netflix. Sure, the first episode was funny and all, and the ostrich & gorilla in heels made me laugh, but it wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd episode that I became hooked and I felt compelled to binge the rest of the series. (Also, going back briefly to the conversation about dubs versus subs, I think if someone tried to dub Agretsuko it would just ruin it. What are your thoughts?)

Day 7 – Who or what was the most annoying anime character?
I'll admit that I only see her as partly annoying - mainly, when I would watch Ouran in a group and Renge would be about to appear from her randomly-placed ascending stage platform, everyone would groan loudly and I would always find their reaction hilarious, and it would be the best part of the whole thing. It could get annoying when watching the series alone, but in a group I actually look forward to Renge's random drop-ins.

That's it for my first 7 days of anime! I had a lot of fun strolling down memory lane, and this actually has me wanting to check out what other series are out there right now - both old favourites or maybe some new ones that I should give a proper try. Big thanks again to Megan from A Geeky Gal, who is the brains behind this tag. Will see you guys next week with another 7 days of anime, and until then I'll keep you all posted!
